“Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show.”

Neruda: The Poet’s Calling By Mark Eisner

Pablo Neruda is one of the most famous poets of the century, known for his erotic poetry. He has also written some of the best poems and my favorite is “Tonight, I am going to write the saddest lines”. Mark Eisner has done a good job and it is one of the most liked biographies of Pablo Neruda. He has described the depth of his poems and also has given an insight into his political views. This is such a good biography book to read if you want to read about Neruda’s poetry.

Army Letters from an Officer's Wife, 1871-1888, a book by Frances Marie Antoinette Mack Roe was originally printed in 1909. This is a collection  of letters written by a woman in the 1870s who proceeded to 'The Far West' (Colorado Territory). The stories included in the letters gave a good knowledge of how people lived in the west at the time as well and what military life was like. Frances Roe notes the problems of camp and garrison life with servants, sand, and shortages, and the enjoyments of parties and new friends, of hunting,  fishing, and camping trips, and of long play with her dog Hal. She is courageous and brilliant, but she's also just a  woman in the middle of out there try to stay alive and make a nice home for herself, her husband, and her new dog. Some interesting illustrations of army life in the west and her experiences with various Indian tribes and her pleasure of army post living when she correlated it to living in the eastern cities also.

According to Dahlmann, the Icelanders were and still are skilled writers and had strong writing habits during their long winters. Any history that does exist of the Norse Kings and their past tragedies, crimes, and acts of valor is virtually entirely owing to this circumstance. The Icelanders, it seems, not only created beautiful writing on their paper or parchment but were also admirably perceptive and eager for accuracy. As a result, they have left us with a collection of narratives known as the Sagas (literally, "Says") that is unmatched among barbarous peoples in terms of both quantity and quality. These ancient Sagas served as the foundation for Snorro Sturluson's History of the Norse Kings, which contains a great deal of poetic fire and faithful sagacity that was used to sort through and adjust the old Sagas. In short, the book deserves to be listed among the greatest histories of all time if it were ever properly edited and provided with accurate maps, chronological summaries, and other supporting materials. The following rough notes of the Early Kings of Norway are hastily put together based on these sources, with a great deal of assistance from accurate, knowledgeable, and unwearied Dahlmann, 1 the German Professor.

Mark Twain's own autobiography remains the last of Twain's incredible long stories. Here he expresses his story in his own specific way, freely sharing his joys and sorrows, his bitterness and honors, and his likes and dislikes, as always jokingly. Not often, this is the story, and some of it is true. More than the tale of a literary person, this memoir is anchored in his relationship with his family and what they all meant to him as a husband, father, and artist. It also includes various of Twain's best comic tales about his rowdy childhood in Hannibal, his misadventures in the Nevada region, his famous Whittier birthday speech, his travel abroad stories, and many more.

Theodore Roosevelt presided over the United States as president from 1901 to 1912. For the Republican and Progressive parties, he held the position of party leader. In addition to being a skilled historian, naturalist, explorer, hunter, and author, he was a fantastic performer. Teddy Roosevelt was a sickly youngster who battled asthma and other illnesses before becoming the Bull Moose. Teddy entered politics after earning his Harvard degree, but that didn't stop him from producing The Naval War of 1812 in 1882, which helped him establish himself as a respected author and historian. Young Teddy was given the President after McKinley's murder in 1901.Despite losing the election, the incident appropriately reflected Teddy's reputation as a men's man.Roosevelt's health rapidly deteriorated, and he passed away in 1919, having established himself as an American legend. Teddy is known today for his accomplishments as an explorer, hunter, novelist, soldier, president, and safari adventurer, which collectively form a singular reputation. Get the truth from the Moose about Teddy's life.

''Notes Of A Son And Brother'' is an autobiography written by Sir Henry James in 1914. The book details James' formative years, including his initial attempts at fiction writing, "the obscure hurt" that prevented him from serving in the Civil War, and the early death of his cherished cousin Minny Temple from illness. James starts using family letters in this second chapter of his autobiography, particularly those from his father Henry James Sr., and brother William. According to academic research, James added his own edits to the letters. James continued writing while earning his first fourteen dollars, which he excitedly examined. He started publishing critical essays and short tales in publications including The Nation, The North American Review, and The Atlantic Monthly. William, James' older brother, was torn between art and science before deciding on the latter, but it would be many years before he achieved the famed philosopher and psychologist status. James paints a vivid picture of his somewhat eccentric father, who pushed his kids "be something" rather than settle for "simple doing," in his book. Before having a stroke in December 1915 and passing away three months later.

'Twenty Years at Hull-House, with autobiographical notes, the most well-known Settlement House in America is the novel of a 1910 book by Hull-House founder and prominent Progressive Era reformer Jane Addams. Her most popular book was Addams' autobiographical narrative of her efforts to ameliorate living circumstances for working-class immigrants in Chicago's West Side slums. This book, which is a new instructional version of Twenty Years at Hull-House, is a great opportunity to introduce students to one of America's most well-known women and a pioneer of the Progressive movement. In 1883, Jane Addams witnessed a distressing scene in London; she wanted to replicate the experiment in the U.S. In 1889, Addams and her friend Ellen Starr moved into a rundown mansion in Chicago's West Side. In the urban industrial areas, Hull-House was envisioned as a "hub for a higher civic and social life." The energy of the first generation of female college graduates found a home in Hull-House. Addams embraced the sexual stereotypes of her day and soothed public fears by acting primarily in the roles of nurturer and caregiver. Although Addams' writing can at times be challenging to understand, her beliefs and actions are genuinely admirable.

Historic Girl is written by E.S. Brooks and they are the tales of girls and women who bravely and boldly altered and shaped history as a companion to "Historic Boys." a compilation of tales from the 1887 issue of "Saint Nicholas" magazine. This volume seeks to tell girls and boys of today the stories of some of their sisters of long ago. Their stories are fruitful of varying lessons, for some were willful as well as courageous. Age and country make but little change in the real girl nature, that has ever been impulsive, trusting, tender, and true. The book has a story of Palmyra or Tadmor as it was originally called, which was one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Its palaces and temples sprang from the sand-covered desert like a sparkling mirage. Today, the lizard suns himself on its collapsed columns while the jackal prowls through its abandoned alleys. The ancient city of Tadmor was a tributary colony of Rome. But the yoke of vassalage was but carelessly worn and lightly felt. Tadmor became Adrianapolis and then Palmyra in manners as in name. And this influence touched even the children in the portico.

As we continued up the South Fork and its tributaries, passing through Buffalo Gap, which would later become a well-known monument on the Texas and Montana cattle path, there was no shortage of water. Indians attacked us again at Buffalo Gap, and while it was just as fruitless as the first, one of the horse wranglers was wounded by an arrow to the shoulder. Fort Concho, the closest location where medical assistance may be anticipated, was a hundred and twelve miles away from us at that time. There was a chance that a few heads may have gotten away from the Clear Fork range and found their way back to their old stomping grounds, but these would be identifiable by a tally mark that set them apart from those that weren't retrieved for the spring delivery. We endured the slaughter of cattle in isolated and inhospitable locations while the better-class Indians helped to stop the atrocities. Outlets pay the greatest and those sent to market second. The few that did survive were pathetic creatures without ears or tails, and their horns, both root, and base, had been frozen until they drooped in strange directions. The winter of 1885–1886 was the milder of the two, especially in comparison to the previous one.

While residing in Lynn, Massachusetts, famous orator and former slave Frederick Douglass penned Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass in 1845 as a memoir and abolitionist dissertation. It is sometimes regarded as the best-known of several accounts by former slaves that were published about the same time. The poem recounts his life experiences in precise detail and is regarded as one of the works of literature that had the greatest impact on the American abolitionist movement in the early 19th century. Eleven chapters make up Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, which details Douglass's time spent as a slave and his aspirations to be set free. There are two forewords by prominent white abolitionists: a letter by Wendell Phillips and a preface by William Lloyd Garrison, both of which support the accuracy of the tale and the author's literacy. On May 1st, 1845, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass was released, and 5,000 copies had been sold. Nearly 30,000 copies had been sold by 1860. He left Lynn, Massachusetts after the book was published and spent two years sailing to England and Ireland out of concern that his owner in the United States would try to get him back.

Seven Wives and Seven Prisons: or, Experiences in the Life of a Matrimonial Monomaniac, A True Story, written by L.A. Abbott. The struggles of a self-described "matrimonial monomaniac"—a man who is hopelessly addicted to marriage—are detailed in this incredibly hilarious memoir. But instead of marital bliss and a happily ever after, Abbott's marriages typically end with him doing time in jail. The author asserts that this work is based on a genuine account of his seven weddings to various women, including the humorous and outrageous circumstances that led to each of those unions as well as their frequent breakdowns and failures that put him in jail. This book is both a humorous description of the author's wacky escapades and a highly tongue-in-cheek diatribe/lament/report of his obsessive enthusiasm for "marrying the right one." From well-known classics, literary fiction, and non-fiction, to lost or unrecognized treasures of international literature.

The 1901 autobiography of American Educator Booker T. Washington is titled Up from Slavery (1856–1915). Up from Slavery details Washington's life for more than forty years, from his time as a slave through his time as a schoolteacher and his role as the face of racial relations in the South. Through laborious, manual effort, a good education, and connections with admirable people, Washington advances in this text's social hierarchy. He emphasizes the value of education for the black community throughout the book as a practical strategy to improve racial relations in the South (particularly in the context of Reconstruction). Washington's conventional, non-confrontational message is essentially what the book is about, and it is backed by the example of his life. It is the story of Education, Industriousness, Humility, The people's capacity for change and Poverty among the black population.

The correspondence reveals a close connection between the two authors as well as a shared appreciation of one another's creative output.
