About the Book

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar by his hard work and erudition became an authority on almost all the major Constitutions in the world, in his time. He has been justly hailed as the architect of the Indian Constitution, which is considered as one of the best. This book traces the contributions made by Dr. Ambedkar to the Indian Constitution, during various stages of its evolution. His speeches, interventions and replies, during discussions on important Articles of the Constitution are compiled in this book. Several books have although been written about Ambedkar, depicting his constant fight for the emancipation of the downtrodden and even about his interaction with Mahatma Gandhi, but not many would know about the gradual rise of Ambedkar to become the Chairman of the Constitutional Drafting Committee, his dexterous efforts to bring the Constitution to its final stage. He received encomia from all sections of the Constituent Assembly and also the outside world. This book is an effort to highlight the 'inside story' during the making of the Indian Constitution between 1946 and 1949 centred on Ambedkar. A perusal of this book will reveal several facets of Dr. Ambedkar's personality including his deep sense of national pride, eagerness to carry with him all sections of society, impeccable character, honesty, frankness, his knowledge of facts and his wonderful memory. This book would not only be useful for students of law, practicing lawyers, members of the judiciary but would also be useful as handy reference for policy designers. This has been aptly pointed out by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam in his Foreword, 'apart from all the legal professionals and student community, it should be read by framers and designers of new policies, systems and procedures for new institutions and establishments'. The purpose of this book is not only to portray Ambedkar as an icon of the oppressed classes but also as a legal luminary of international repute who graced this world with his presence during the earlier part of the last century. The fact that today we are witnessing many of the things that Dr. Ambedkar dreaded would happen in India in later years only goes to prove how prophetic he was during his deliberations in the Constituent Assembly. The reader will appreciate that the book has been deliberately kept absolutely apolitical. The book is indeed a tribute to Ambedkar's wonderful talents, hitherto not well-known to the outside world.
