La anterior novela de Jérôme Ferrari, El sermón sobra la caída de Roma obtuvo el Prix Goncourt 2012. La trama giraba en torno a dos jóvenes que, abandonando la carrera de filosofía, deciden instalarse en un pueblo en Córcega y trabajar en un bar. La novela nos narraba el fin de un mundo. El Principio también narra la desaparición de un mundo y Jérôme Ferrari vuelve a convocar a un joven filósofo pero, esta vez, para convertirlo en testigo de la vida del físico alemán Werner Heisenberg, fundador de la mecánica cuántica e inventor del célebre Principio de indeterminación que le mereció el Premio Nobel de física en 1932.

Al principio de su carrera Heisenberg vive en una "Atenas espiritual" al formar parte de la comunidad científica internacional, que se reúne y discute a menudo, henchida de un idealismo y una fe en la ciencia que se va ensombreciendo a medida que asciende el nazismo y su despiadada y absurda política antisemita se inmiscuye en la universidad y la academia: primero se expulsa a los científicos de origen judío, luego muchos profesores emigran de manera voluntaria, aterrados por el panorama que se perfila, mientras que otros, como Heisenberg, permanecen en Alemania, no porque apoyen al nazismo, sino por cierta idea del deber, de la resistencia o por el simple amor a su patria. Durante la guerra Heisenberg y otros colegas reciben el encargo, por parte de la cúpula nazi, de proseguir sus investigaciones con el fin de aplicarlas a la invención de una bomba atómica, una carrera nuclear en la que también están volcados científicos estadounidenses, que se adelantan a los alemanes al lanzar la primera bomba atómica en Hiroshima.

Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Heisenberg y otros científicos alemanes de élite permanecen medio año recluidos en Farm Hall, un cottage inglés, donde los Aliados les revelan que los americanos ya han inventado la bomba atómica, mientras graban todas sus palabras para determinar su grado de colaboración con el Reich.

La vida de Heisenberg -tan indeterminada como su principio cuántico-, sus investigaciones científicas y las consecuencias que estas tuvieron sobre la historia de la humanidad constituyen un magnifico marco que Ferrari aprovecha para exponer diversas cuestiones filosóficas. La novela interpela al lector sobre la cuestión del problema del lenguaje relacionado en este caso a la ciencia y a la interpretación del mundo en general. Todo es cuestión del lenguaje; como le dijo Niels Bohr al joven Heisenberg en 1922 "la vocación de físico es también vocación de poeta".

En Le Principe el lenguaje, pero también el silencio, resultan ser la llave que abre las puertas hacia la comprensión de los conceptos más complejos que presiden el orden del mundo, y el mismo libro resuelve de manera magistral la pregunta que se plantea: sabiendo que existe una verdad inalcanzable, la literatura y la poesía son el único medio que le permiten al hombre desvelar lo inefable de este mundo. O, como dice el propio autor, mirar -ni tan solo por un momento- por encima del hombro de Dios.
