He was before them, and as the first born and well-beloved of the Father, "the thrones and dominions" were constituted for him, and by him; and by him, and for him, as their Captain, all these authorities exist. To deny the powers of creation ascribed to the Lord in the New Testament, unless he be God in the strict and supreme sense, is, in effect, to deny the ability of the Father to grant such powers. In the forgiveness of sins, the Lord never asserted that he exercised this power as God, but as "the Son of Man," that is, as the Messiah, the Son of God; and not only so, he delegated that power and authority to others, even to his immediate disciples, "men of like passions as other men," who had power to exercise such authority in apostolic days. No argument in favour of the inferential Athanasian or Trinitarian doctrine can be valid on this ground. Could not the Most High invest His beloved Son with authority to forgive sins, and also power to delegate such authority to others. The Lord's divine prescience, also, may well be understood without affording any countenance to the inferential doctrine? Is there any difficulty in the conception that an Omnipresent and Omniscient Being, unto whom all events are ever present, can, as it may please Him, reveal such knowledge either to His dear Son, or to any other Being, as would render the person so honoured as much conscious as if he were universally present to take cognisance of events? The prophet could tell the King of Israel (2 Kings vi.) what the King of Syria spoke in his bedchamber; shall we, then, deny the Father's power to communicate such knowledge, only much more extensive to His dear 'Son, who alone has been found worthy, an...
