He wrote to the king: "Sire, the English have surrendered Rouen, but they retain Honfleur. Come and take immediate possession of these two cities." Charles, thus advised, did not delay to appear before Rouen, in which he made his solemn entry, at the head of his household, November 10, 1449. Let us listen to Jacques le Bouvier, first herald of the king of arms of France, who thus gives the details of the cortege: "The king," he says, "set out from Saint Catherine's place to enter his city of Rouen. He was accompanied by the King of Sicily, the Counts of Saint-Pol and of Nevers, the Counts of Maine and of Clermont, the grand equerry, Poton de Xaintrailles, the Chancellor of France, Juvenal des Ursins, all magnificently robed and equipped. In advance of the king, rode the archbishop of the city, accompanied by several bishops, abbots and other dignitaries of the Church. Next came Count Dunois, lieutenantgeneral, mounted on a charger with a large white cross on housings of crimson velvet; he was robed in a coat of the same color lined with fine fur, wearing a hat of black velvet and a sword ornamented with gold and precious gems, having on the hilt a ruby valued at twenty thousand crowns. The seneschal of Poicton, the Sire de Gaucourt and Sire Jacques-Cceur, silversmith, attended Djunois, their horses caparisoned, and themselves clothed in the same manner as Dunois.
