Excerpt: Miyamoto Musashi ) (c. 1584June 13 (Japanese calendar: May 19), 1645), also known as Shinmen Takez, Miyamoto Bennosuke, or by his Buddhist name Niten Draku, was a Japanese swordsman and samurai famed for his duels and distinctive style. Musashi, as he was often simply known, became renowned through stories of his excellent swordsmanship in numerous duels, even from a very young age. He was the founder of the Hyh Niten Ichi-ry or Niten-ry style of swordsmanship and the author of The Book of Five Rings Go Rin No Sho), a book on strategy, tactics, and philosophy that is still studied today. The details of Miyamoto Musashi's early life are difficult to verify. Musashi himself simply states in Gorin no Sho that he was born in Harima Province. Niten Ki (an early biography of Musashi) supports the theory that Musashi was born in 1584: " was born in Bansh, in Tensh 12 , the Year of the Monkey."
