Leas Bruder ist der Bösewicht Joseph Süß Oppenheimer, der mit Billigung seines Herrn Herzog Karl Alexander von Württemberg als Regierungsvertreter ein intrigantes Ausbeutungssystem gegen Gesetz und Anstand durchsetzt, bis der Herzog plötzlich verstirbt und Süß gehenkt wird. Historisch war der als Jud Süß diffamierte Joseph Süß Oppenheimer 1738 Opfer eines Justizmordes mit fingierten Anschuldigungen, wie aus den erst 1918 veröffentlichten Prozessakten hervorgeht. Erstdruck: 1827 im Morgenblatt. Neuausgabe mit einer Biographie des Autors. Herausgegeben von Karl-Maria Guth. Berlin 2016, 2. Auflage. Textgrundlage ist die Ausgabe: Wilhelm Hauff: Sämtliche Werke in drei Bänden. Nach den Originaldrucken und Handschriften. Textredaktion und Anmerkungen Sibylle von Steinsdorff, München: Winkler, 1970. Die Paginierung obiger Ausgabe wird in dieser Neuausgabe als Marginalie zeilengenau mitgeführt. Umschlaggestaltung von Thomas Schultz-Overhage unter Verwendung des Bildes: Überhöhte Darstellung der Hinrichtung des Joseph Süß Oppenheimer am 4. Februar 1738 vor den Toren Stuttgarts. Gesetzt aus der Minion Pro, 11 pt. Über den Autor: 1802 als Sohn eines Regierungssekretärs in Stuttgart geboren, studiert Wilhelm Hauff Theologie in Blaubeuren und schreibt als flammender Burschenschaftler erste Gedichte. Nach einer ausgedehnten Bildungsreise nach Paris, Brüssel, Hamburg und Berlin wird er Redakteur des Cotta'schen Morgenblattes. Innerhalb von gut zwei Jahren entstehen drei umfangreiche Romane, sieben Novellen einige Gedichte und vor allem zwölf Kunstmärchen, die seinen Ruhm bis heute begründen. Am 18. November 1827 stirbt Wilhelm Hauff im Alter von 25 Jahren innerhalb weniger Tage an einer Infektionskrankheit.
