In der "Kritik der reinen Vernunft" kritisiert er die traditionelle Metaphysik, da diese die Vernunftideen Freiheit des Willens, Unsterblichkeit der Seele und Dasein Gottes für das "Ding an sich" betrachtet hat, welches zu falschen Folgerungen führte und die Metaphysik in Verruf brachte. Diese Vernunftideen sind in der Erfahrung nicht anzutreffen und somit weder beweisbar noch widerlegbar. Damit wendet er sich gegen die Rationalisten, die die Grundlage der Erkenntnis allein auf die Vernunft gegründet wissen wollen. Aber auch dem skeptischen Empirismus erteilt er eine Absage, da dieser alle Erkenntnisse auf die Erfahrung zurückführt oder eine gesicherte Erkenntnis für unmöglich hält. Laut Kant gibt es nämlich auch Erkenntnisse a priori, d.h. Erkenntnisse die vor aller Erfahrung gemacht werden können. Kant fordert so in der theoretischen Philosophie eine Kritik, die die Grenzen der Erkenntnis bestimmt, den sogenannten Kritizismus. In dem praktischen Gebrauch der Vernunft stellen nun aber die Vernunftideen ein Postulat dar. Moral ist nur möglich, wenn es eine Freiheit des Willens gibt, die sich allerdings in der theoretischen Philosophie weder beweisen noch widerlegen lässt. Bei der praktischen Wende Kants scheint es so zunächst einen Widerspruch zu geben. Zum einen kann die Freiheit theoretisch nicht bewiesen werden - entweder es gibt Freiheit oder alles läuft nach Naturgesetzen ab - und zum anderen, muss es Freiheit in praktischer Hinsicht geben, wenn die Moral möglich sein soll.
