Don Rodrigue, dit Le Cid, est un très bon commandant, reconnu de tous. Son père, Don Diego devient vieux, mais était aussi très reconnu dans sa jeunesse. Le père de Chimène lui a lancé un duel, d'une façon méprisante, à cause d'un poste que celui-ci avait reçu auprès du roi. Mais Don Diego est trop âgé pour se battre, il demande donc à son fils, Rodrigue de vaincre pour lui et de sauver son honneur et celui de la famille! Mais Rodrigue et Chimène s'aiment d'un amour tendre. Rodrigue se retrouve face à un dillemme Cornelien. (cette expression a été inventée à partir de cette oeuvre de Corneille.) Il ne sait que choisir, dans tous les cas il est piégé. S'il se bat et meurt, ou se laisse mourir, alors l'honneur sera perdu et Chimène ne l'aimera plus. Si par son épée, il verse le sang, l'honneur sera sauf, mais Chimène perdue. S'il refuse le combat l'honneur est perdu, l'amour de Chimène aussi... Il décide de sauver l'honneur même s'il lui faut perdre Chimène. Il combat et tue. Chimène, bien qu'aimant encore Rodrigue ne peut que le haïr. C'est pour elle aussi un cruel déchirement dans son coeur. Cependant de son côté, le roi a pris Chimène en affection et quand Rodrigue revient victorieux d'une grande embuscade tendue par des ennemis, il lui propose Chimène en mariage... Celle ci, le voulant de tout son coeur et ayant une bonne raison de le pouvoir, accepte.
About the Author: Pierre Corneille Né à Rouen (France) le 06/06/1606; Mort à Paris (France) le 01/10/1684 Grand dramaturge français du XVIIe siècle, Pierre Corneille s'est démarqué de ses contemporains par une oeuvre théâtrale riche et particulièrement moderne. D'abord fortement inspiré par la comédie, il glissera peu à peu dans la tragédie, toujours avec talent, grandeur, liberté et générosité. Vers une carrière d'avocat Pierre Corneille voit le jour le 6 juin 1606 au sein d'une noble famille. Aîné de six enfants, il suit ses études au Collège des Jésuites de Rouen. Brillant élève, il se passionne pour l'art de la rhétorique et les thèmes antiques. Il obtient son diplôme sans difficulté et peut désormais rejoindre le barreau sur les traces de son père et de son grand-père. Toutefois, le métier ne le comble pas. Sa timidité excessive ne lui permet pas de plaider librement. Il s'en détourne donc quelque peu pour se consacrer à la poésie et à l'écriture. Il supportera toutefois sa charge jusqu'en 1651. Ses premières pièces, nouvelle comédie Corneille rédige sa première oeuvre dramatique, qu'il intitule Mélite, en 1629. Jouée au théâtre du Marais (Paris) l'année suivante, cette comédie marque le début d'une longue et productive carrière de dramaturge. Il s'inspire des événements de sa vie et des personnages qui l'entourent pour présenter des mises en scène profondes, réalistes et sentimentales. Il apporte ainsi un nouveau souffle à la comédie et ne cesse d'en produire. Sans se détacher de son genre favori, il écrit également des tragi-comédies telles que Clitandre (1631) ou Médée (1635). En 1636, il jongle avec les genres dramatiques dans l'Illusion comique. Comme l'indique le titre de la pièce, Corneille met en scène des faux-semblants et perd le spectateur dans des rebondissements incessants et passionnants.
