About the Book

English summary: The interest of ancient studies in the various manifestations of power and its polar opposite, powerlessness, as well as their meaning for understanding social phenomena, remains undeterred. This book brings together studies from a younger generation of scholars at the University of Heidelberg, who operate from wholly distinctive perspectives and with diverse, analytical methods in order to offer multifaceted views on the situation of power and powerlessness in pre-modern societies. Their studies span chronologically as well as geographically wide areas, from the Old Kingdom of ancient Egypt and the Bronze Age Aegean to the Arabic tribes of the 7th century in the area of modern-day Syria and Iraq. Through the individual case studies, the structures and tensions between power and powerlessness are characterized in their individual religious, social, and economic dimensions. Some examples are the economic basis of political power in Mycenaean Greece, the social dimensions of monumental architecture in Minoan Crete and Mycenaean Greece, the ascent into the heavens of deceased Egyptian rulers and their ascension to power in heaven, the possibilities of influence through philosophers of late antiquity on diverse structures of power, the transition of power and legitimization of claims to power by the rulers of Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt, and finally the history of the Arabic tribes between the two powers of the Byzantine Empire and Sassanid Persia.
