Im ersten Teil wird das Konzept der kultursoziologischen Medienwirkungsforschung entworfen. Dieses Konzept wurzelt in der Tradition der deutschsprachigen Kulturwissenschaften und baut auf den Theorien von Ernst Cassirer, Pierre Bourdieu und Alphons Silbermann auf. Im zweiten Teil des Buchs wird eine Fallstudie zu dem in der deutschen Gesellschaft noch immer wichtigen Distinktionssymbol "Klassik" dokumentiert. Traditionell hat die Deutungshoheit über "Klassik" das Bildungsbürgertum, dies ist jedoch nicht mehr unangefochten. Der Bedeutungswandel von "Klassik" im Programm des privat-kommerziellen Senders "Klassik Radio" und seine gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Auswirkungen werden in dieser Arbeit beleuchtet. Zunächst werden die Entwicklung des Programms und die Gründe für den Wandel in einer Programmgeschichte als funktionale Analyse rekonstruiert. Berücksichtigt werden Organisationsgeschichte, Nutzung und Rahmenbedingungen. Im zweiten Teil werden in einer Rezipientenstudie mit Gruppendiskussionen die soziokulturellen Effekte des Senders auf eine bestimmte soziale Gruppe, das gebildete Bürgertum, untersucht.
