Excerpt from book: if he exposed his deadly hatred, if this ' roaring lion' walked about without disguise, openly seeking to destroy, we should at least recognise him. Even then we should have abundant need to watch and pray. For he is very powerful; and he has legions of evil spirits at his command. What are the exact limits of his power (for it is limited), we are not told. What he knows, and what he can do; how far his influence reaches over body and mind, over thoughts, and circumstances, and events; as to all this we are left in a dim and awful uncertainty. We know that his power is great; how great we do not know. But this we know for certain?that it is a limited, because only a permitted power. Satan did much against Job ; but only because he was allowed by God: he could not go beyond his leave; there was a point, beyond which he had no power whatever. He who said to Satan, ' Behold, all that he hath is in thy power?thy hand,' said also, ' only upon himself put not forth thine hand.' (Job, i. 12.) Our Saviour cast out evil spirits by a word, they were forced to acknowledge and obey Him; Satan, and all his hosts, are absolutely subject to God ; his power against us is only just what God permits. But our danger, as here stated, is from ' the wiles of the devil.' The word translated ' wiles' is a remarkable word. It is the word from which we get our English words, method, methodical, methodism. In a good sense, it means a settled and orderly plan: in a bad sense, it means a deceitful scheme. This is its meaning here,' the wiles?the deceitful schemes ?of the devil.' His knowledge and cunning are great.
