John Buchan, a simple mechanic who disrupts Martials plans.When John fills out a job application without all of the instructions, he includes too much for a mechanic, or maintenance position. He hasn't had a good job in a long time, but is glad he hasn't lost everything like many have. He includes his simple method of collecting moisture from air to water his garden. Water rationing doesn't permit watering gardens and he must have a garden to provide food. John enjoys debates with Ben and learns from him. His friend Rich is also a mechanic and he is happy he found work in disaster remediation, but misses him when he leaves. He feels bad his friend may lose his job to a partner. He can't wait around to find out about the strange application and takes a job out of town. He has to train a partner to paint and is being cheated, so he comes home defeated. Back to hand digging leach fields wasn't pleasant in the heat wave, but all he could get.With no jobs scheduled, he begins digging a hole beside his big tree, hoping to save it with water to its roots. He is stunned by Donna's beauty when she calls down to him. He is even more stunned when she offers him a job and a contract to manufacture his simple invention. As her assistant, he helps teach a crew of partners to think on their own without mind control. In the process, he falls in love with her, not knowing her secrete.Donna snaps at an opportunity to help his friend Rich, who is stranded with a group of people. It's the perfect opportunity to introduce him to her parents while helping the friend.Meanwhile, Martin Dango is bored with shooting partners at a Burns International work camp and plans a vacation in Pennsylvania, where he can settle some scores and teach his wife do God's work killing sinners. While there they kill a cop and he kills his wife when finishing off the old cop in a rage. While in PA, he gets a transfer to work there. When they get to Colorado, John finds out two things. His friend has been abducted and fitted with a mind control device along with the other he is with. Jack Hughes also tells him Donna's secrete; she is a partner. He is devastated at the lie, but Jack brings him around and he realizes he loves her anyway.With the group of people they bring back, things become complicated. Mysterious black trucks following them and troubling calls from Colorado. One of the abducted people is a movie star and her accessing a bank account raise red flags in Washington. To better hide the group, John buys an old building in the country. It seems to work, but the group sends out videos that go viral. Millions have missing family members and suspect the government abducted them. Consequently, a revolt begins. John is given a position as coronal in the citizen army fighting against the loyalist backing Marcial's illegal government. He does well recruiting, but is badly wounded and brought back to their lab, which is a makeshift hospital for the citizen army. Donna fears he will die, as do the partners that have come to love him.When a way is found to disable signals to the abducted people used by the government, the citizen army storms the White house. With an elected government restored, partners are all freed and John and Donna are married on the White House lawn.
