Die Schule hat auf diesem Sektor Aufgaben zu übernehmen. Sie kann es nicht ignorieren, dass die Medien in vielen Bereichen menschlichen Lebens eine zentrale Rolle spielen - und das nicht erst seit heute. Die heutigen Schülerinnen und Schüler des 21. Jahrhunderts leben in "[...] reich aggregierten und strukturierten Medienwelten [...]", die ihr tägliches Leben beeinflussen und prägen. Daher ist ein kritischer und reflexiver Umgang mit den Medien vor allem in der erzieherischen und bildenden Institution Schule vonnöten und bedarf pädagogischer Begleitung, um die Heranwachsenden durch ästhetische Anregung, bildende Auseinandersetzung und ethische Diskussion zu mündigen Bürgerinnen und Bürgern der modernen (Medien-)Gesellschaft zu "erziehen". Als Lehrkraft steht man den Medien in einer ähnlich rezeptiven Situation gegenüber wie die Schülerinnen und Schüler, da man selbst Mediennutzer ist. Daher ist es die Aufgabe der Lehrerinnen und Lehrer, das Medienangebot und die Medienbotschaften mit fachlichem Wissen und dem erzieherischen Auftrag zu verbinden. Dies bedeutet, es gilt Medieninhalte adäquat aufzubereiten, die Medien und ihre Inhalte möglichst objektiv und kritisch zu betrachten sowie den Schülerinnen und Schülern in einer handlungsorientierten Form Medienkompetenz zu vermitteln.
