August 1939, eine Woche vor dem Überfall Hitlers auf Polen, erging an alle Handelsschiffe der Befehl, den Heimathafen oder neutrale Häfen anzulaufen. Der portugiesische Diktator Salazar erklärte sein Land für neutral. Somit war auch der Hafen Mormugao in der portugiesischen Kolonie Goa ein neutraler Hafen. Hier trafen nacheinander drei Frachtschiffe der Deutschen Dampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft Hansa, kurz DDG Hansa, und etwas später ein italienisches Schiff ein. Für die Besatzungen hielt das Schicksal ein zehn Jahre dauerndes Drama bereit. Fast dreißig Jahre später erscheint ein romanartiges Buch von James Leasor, in dem zum ersten Mal bestätigt wurde, dass ein britisches Geheimkommando im Einsatz war.
