About the Book

The quality of receiving waters and the urban environment depends heavily on effective wastewater treatment and sewerage systems. But much of the world has inadequate facilities and even better equipped countries have problems in meeting the demands now made. Many sewer systems are aging and undermaintained; new areas of concern, e.g. nutrient removal, are arising; and more stringent effluent standards are being set, often as a result of international agreements. To address these issues leading experts from 30 countries gathered for the "Sewage Into 2000" conference, held alongside the Aquatech 1992 exhibition. The 47 papers selected here include topics covering interactions of sewerage and wastewater treatment; transportation and sedimentation in sewers; control and real-time control in sewerage systems; sewer design; sewer management; new developments in wastewater treatment; nutrient removal; and special topics in wastewater treatment. This book should be of interest to scientists, engineers, policy-makers and managers working in sanitary and municipal engineering, ecology and environmental protection, planning and the management of urban infrastructure.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Interaction of Sewerage and Wastewater Treatment: Interactions of sewerage and waste-water treatment - practical examples in the Netherlands, J.H.J.M. Van Der Graaf; The research programme "RWZI 2000" - state of affairs and a look into the future, A.H. Dirkzwager et al. Part 2 Transportation and Sedimentation in Sewers: On the prediction of sediment transport in sewers with deposits, R.A. Kleijwegt; Experience with vortex separators for combined sewer overflow control, H. Brombach et al. Part 3 Control and Real-Time Control in Sewerage Systems: On the potential of real time control of urban drainage systems, F. Nelen; Reduction of combined sewer overflow quality by application of the coagulation process, M. Weyland et al. Part 4 Design Aspects of Sewers: New guidelines for calculations on sewer systems in the Netherlands, reality or fiction?, H.J. van Mameren et al. Part 5 Sewerage Management: Reliability of sewage systems as an element of environmental protection in urban areas; Practice of automated control in urban wastewater transport system of Mosco, Y.A. Ermolin. Part 6 New Developments in Wastewater Treatment: Possibilities of nitrification with immobilized cells in waste-water treatment - model or practical system?, R.H. Wijffels et al; Improving municipal waste water quality by effluent polishing - a pilot scale experiment at Winterswijk, The Netherland, F.I.H.M. Oesterholt, B.A. Bult. Part 7 Nutrient Removal: A strategy to meet the nutrient (N and P) standards of the urban wastewater directive, M. Farrimond, J. Upton; Biological filters for post-denitrification, S.-E. Jepsen, J. La Cour Jansen. Part 8 Special Topics of Wastewater Treatment: Low cost packaged sewage treatment plant for production of high quality effluent at small work, B. Chambers et al; Membranes for sewage treatment - the reality, P. Gosling, D. Brown; Sewage - towards realistic environmental protection, P.A. Johnston et al.
