In her academic life (previously having worked at University College Cork and at the University of Sydney), she has written three academic monographs and edited two, where she explores ideas of how the past is an essential ingredient in forming identity, whether of an individual or a country, with special reference to Spain since Spain's contemporary fiction is her area of academic expertise.
