Andrew W FitzAndrew W. Fitz (1895-1986) was the author of three poetry books, countless unpublished poems, and an inspirational booklet, Try It. In the 1930s he built his own car and was a trademark and patent holder for several inventions. A.W. as he was known, as the son of former slaves and a graduate of Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kansas. He served in the personnel department of the 65th Pioneer Infantry during World War I.Born in Coffeyville, Kansas, he lived most of his adult life in Council Bluffs, Iowa. There he was active in civic affairs that involved the betterment of Black people. He served as president of the Council Bluffs NAACP, and lived his final years in Omaha, Nebraska.
