Angela ClarkANGELA CLARK studied Romanian literature with the historian and professor Dennis Deletant at the University of London School of Slavonic and East European Studies. She went on to work with the United Nations and British Council in Bucharest and elsewere in Romania and the Moldavia region while doing research for her Ph.D. thesis. She was working on her acclaimed translation of My Childhood at the Gate of Unrest inside Romania at the very end of the Ceauşescu regime, when the Securitate (secret police) were on the lookout against all signs of dissent and especially against prominent opponents in exile like Paul Goma. The secret police took an inordinate interest in anyone purchasing ballpoint or fountain pens and ink, as this might indicate uncensored writing or dissident activity.
