Anthony G AmsterdamFor more than 55 years, Anthony G. (Tony) Amsterdam has been a law teacher and pro bono litigator. He has been credited with arguing many of the United States Supreme Court cases that have shaped the contemporary constitutional restrictions on capita punishment: Furman v. Georgia; Woodson v. North Carolina; and Lockett v. Ohio, among others. In collaboration with other capital defense lawyers, he has served as brief-writer, strategic consultant, or oral advocate in more than 90 death cases in the United States Supreme Court and more than 30 death cases in lower federal courts and state courts. He has worked on about 35 noncapital Supreme Court cases involving criminal-procedure, civil-liberties, and racial-justice issues (Miranda v. Arizona, Shuttlesworth v. Birmingham, Duncan v. Louisiana, Terry v. Ohio, and Kolender v. Lawson, among others) and has litigated another couple of dozen such cases in the lower courts. He taught at the Penn and Stanford law schools before joining the N.Y.U. law faculty in 1982, and at NYU he designed and ran the innovative Lawyering Program which introduced clinical training into the first-year curriculum. He was chaired as the Judge Edward Weinfeld Professor of Law and appointed as a University Professor before retiring from teaching in 2013 to devote himself to death-penalty defense litigation.
