Barbara FowlerBarbara Fowler graduated from Syracuse University and earned her master's degree from the University of Buffalo. She has taught for forty-four years in a variety of middle schools, high schools, and colleges. Primarily, she taught German and English.In Jackson, Tennessee, she first taught at the Episcopal Day School, followed by the University School of Jackson, then at Tigrett Middle School, and finally at Madison Academic. She also taught night classes at Union University in Jackson. Barbara led many student groups to Europe and in the United States. She felt it was part of her job to open the world to her students. Trips included East and West Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Denmark, Italy, Greece, France, and England. In the US, students saw Mark Twain's Hannibal, Mo., Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania. Students' worldview often changed because of their experiences on these trips, and that was exactly Barbara's goal. During her career, Barbara received several awards including Teacher of the Year, Belz-Lipman Holocaust Teacher of the Year, and Tennis Coach of the Year. In addition, she co-led Madison Academic's Decathlon Teams to win first place in the nation for over ten years. Since her retirement, Barbara has spent her time in her garden tending to over five hundred varieties of daylilies. She also creates beautiful needlepoint pieces and writes when the spirit moves her. She is also active with First Presbyterian Church's Service Committee, where she volunteers in varied programs including Gratitude Baskets and Meals on Wheels.
