Booker T. WashingtonBooker T. Washington (1856–1915), an educator, author, and founder of the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama, was the foremost black leader of the late 1800s. His 1901 autobiography, Up From Slavery, is still widely read today.
