Her previous book, A Dark Inheritance: Blood, Race, and Sex in Colonial Jamaica, was a finalis for the Frederick Douglass Book Prize. She has received fellowships from MacDowell, the American Philosophical Society, the Eccles Centre at the British Library, the Gilder Lehrman Center, and many others.
