Carey McWilliams
Carey McWilliams grew up on a cattle ranch and his first mentors were cowboys. For four years he was Commissioner of Immigration and Housing in California. His books include Factories in the Field, III Fares the Land, Brothers under te Skin, Prejudice, and Southern California Country. He served as editor of The Nation for more than a decade prior to his death. Wilson Carey McWilliams, his son, is professor of political science at Rutgers University.
