Carroll DavidsonIn 1992, I decided to join the Army. I was a young person with no vision on what I wanted to do with my life. That changed the second I stepped into basic training. I was told there was no way I could become a soldier which was the start of a huge chp on my shoulder to prove everyone wrong. After serving at Benning, Korea, Stewart and multiple deployments, I decided to get out. My transitioning was a joke. I literally walked in and got the paperwork signed and stamped for each class and before I knew it, I was a civilian. Although I had a plan it was quickly axed as I showed up and was told that they were conducting cutbacks and I didn't have a job. The first thought that ran through my head was going back into the military. But I told myself that I would succeed, and the journey began. My resume was worse than a train wreck since I was told during transition that the resume class was once a month and I would be good to go since I was an NCO. So, I tried my best to create a resume and printed out 100 copies and went to the post office and got 100 stamps. I then proceeded to look through the yellow pages getting addresses to companies that sounded interesting. The mass mailing was sent. Less than a week later I had two interviews in the transportation industry. Over the next ten years I kept moving up the chain with several companies ultimately becoming the director of transportation. During this time period I always was assisting HR and the recruiting department hire veterans as I preached to the top brass that veterans bring a unique skill set to the table. Then the day came when I was attending a job fair as a potential employer at a military base along with being a guest speaker to the troops. Later in the day I was asked to sit on a panel where we were asked questions from active duty soldiers in the transitioning process. A Sargent asked, In the civilian workforce how important is a resume? A lady that was representing a large fortune 500 company that NEVER SERVED immediately communicated that if she received a resume that the summary was not perfect, she would immediately place in the do not call stack. Obviously, I wanted to answer the same question which I communicated that your uniform is the resume. Right then I knew our veterans needed assistance with companies that want to hire veterans knowing the immediate impact they will receive on daily goals and objectives.
