Crispin BatesCrispin Bates is Professor of modern and contemporary South Asian history at the University of Edinburgh, UK, and former Director of the University's internationally renowned Centre for South Asian Studies. Currently, he is Visiting Research Professo at Sunway University, Malayasia. He has written and published widely on labour migration within India and overseas, and has authored, co-authored and edited a total of fifteen books. Some of his notable works are Community, Empire and Migration: South Asians in Diaspora (Palgrave Macmillan 2001), Subalterns and the Raj: Asia Since 1600 (Routledge, 2007), and the multi-volume series 'Mutiny at the Margins' (Sage). He is also the general editor of 'Global South Asians', an ongoing multi-volume series with the Press that explores the contributions made by mobile South Asians to global history during the colonial and postcolonial era.
