A devoted lover of books, he served as president of his high school Library Club and spent decades building a personal library while quietly dreaming of writing his own stories.After a 45-year career with AT&T, Darrel retired in 2023 and turned fully to the work he had always imagined. He was married for 33 years to his husband, who passed in 2024, and has long dedicated his time to an Atlanta-based AIDS charity founded in 1979, helping raise more than $3.2 million for the community.
