David L. SzantonDavid L. Szanton, a social anthropologist, served as executive director of International and Area Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1991 to 2001. As a founding board membe(EAF) in 1980, and as its pro bono president since 2001, of the Ethnic Arts Foundation he has traveled to the Mithila region of Bihar to meet and discuss artwork with painters, faculty, students, and graduates of the free Mithila Art Institute (MAI, established in 2003 by the EAF); purchase paintings for exhibitions; and return profits from sales to artists. He has curated 19 Mithila painting exhibitions in India, South Africa, France, and the US.
