He graduated with a B.A. in music from the University of Pennsylvania, where he completed course work with George Crumb, George Rochberg, and Richard Wernick, as well as doble bass studies with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. After attending graduate school in musicology at New York University, he switched to law, going on to work as a public interest lawyer.
