Dennis HamleyDennis Hamley was born in 1935. He was a pupil at the Royal Latin School, Buckingham and then read English at Jesus College, Cambridge, graduating in 1959 After teaching at Stockport Grammar School and Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefieldl he wa appointed as Senior Lecturer in English. In 1978 he was appointed as County English Adviser for Hertfordshire, a job he loved until 1992, when education ttook a turn which he abominated. He took early retirement in order to write full-time. He was married in 1965 to Agnes, an Irish nurse. They had two children, Peterr, a scientist, and Mary, an editor at OUP. Agnes conytacted lymphatic cancer and died in 2006.
