Eugene LindseyGrowing up I remember my family always telling me of Uncle Tom's stories. Everybody's favorite story was 'The Major's Story.' Tom Lindsey was known by many in Durham, NC, (by members of a generation before me.) By the time I was old enough to care orpay attention, time had taken its toll on my father's memory. All he could tell me is that Uncle Tom was a really funny guy. About 45 years after Tom passed, I found two of Uncle Tom's notebooks. One was a small leather pocket notebook. The other notebook is a standard notebook (of the 1930's), it had small rings and the cover was cardboard with a cloth covering. I later learned that Tom Lindsey was known as a Platform Performer; akin to a stand up comedian. Thomas Heber Lindsey was born on March 9, 1878 and was the fourth of eight children of John Monroe and Nancy Catherine (Morris) Lindsey. He passed on October 3, 1941 in Wilmington, NC, at 65 years of age. He was a teacher, lawyer and NC State Senator. I never found out why he was in Wilmington at his passing but as God has His own ways, my father also passed in Wilmington in 1988. My father was Uncle Tom's favorite nephew and he was also my father's favorite uncle. Neither Thomas Heber nor my father Eugene Alvis ever lived in Wilmington. My father was visiting on son's birthday. I have no knowledge of why Tom was in Wilmington. Read More Read Less
