Fouque de La MotteFriedrich Heinrich Karl de la Motte Fouque (1777-1843) was from a French Huguenots family which fled to Prussia to escape religious persecution after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. He had a commission in the Prussian army from 1994 to 1803 an saw active service. He marries Karoline von Briest in 1803 and retires from the army to devote himself to literature.
