Fran ShorFrancis Shor, a Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, teaches courses in the fields of historical and cultural studies. He has been a recent recipient of a Fulbright Distinguished Scholars Awar to New Zealand and Visiting Faculty Fellowship to the University of Melbourne. His books include Utopianism and Radicalism in a Reforming America, 1888-1918 (Greenwood 1997) and a forthcoming comparative study of the Industrial Workers of the World. His present research is focused on the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Other publications range from chapters on the IWW in New Zealand, gender and socialism, and anarchist communitarianism in twentieth century America to scholarly articles covering topics in 19th and 20th century cultural and social history that have appeared in journals such as Radical History Review, International Labor and Working Class History, Journal of American Culture, Journal of Men's Studies, Journal of Criminal Justice and Popular Culture, Prospects, Labour History, Film & History, The Insurgent Sociologist, and Utopian Studies. During the last several years he has also published scores of political and cultural commentaries on progressive websites such as Common Dreams and CounterPunch. These commentaries have, in turn, been republished on numerous other websites around the world and translated into Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Farsi, Dutch and other languages.
