Futabatei ShimeiFutabatei Shimei (1864-1909) was born Hasegawa Tatsunosuke in Edo (Tokyo) and studied Russian language at the Tokyo Foreign Language School and in Russia. He published essays of literary criticism and translated the works of Ivan Turgenev and other Rssian writers into Japanese. His first novel Ukigumo (The Drifting Cloud ) appeared in 1886. His second Sono Omokage (An Adopted Husband) was published in 1906, followed by Heibon (Mediocre) in 1907. The translators: Buhachiro Mitsui (1885-1967) later published books in Japanese and English on commercial correspondence. Gregg M. Sinclair (1890-1976) earned a master's degree from Columbia University in 1919.
