Gabriel N. HortobagyiGabriel N. Hortobagyi, MD, FACP is a native of Hungary who obtained his MD in Bogota, Columbia from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 1970. Postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology was completed at St. Luke's Hospital inCleveland, Ohio and the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, respectively. Board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, Dr. Hortobagyi's research interests include developmental therapeutics, and all aspects of the biology and management of breast cancer. Dr. Hortobagyi has contributed over 400full-length publications in peer-reviewed journals, over 290 invited papers and more than 100 book chapters. Since completing his subspecialty training, he has remained at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. He has occupied multiple administrative positions at that institution, including Alternate Head, Medical Breast Service (7/79 - 5/84); Associate Vice President for Patient Care (7/80 - 2/81); Director of the Medical Oncology Fellowship Training Program (7/80 - 12/85); Chief, Medical Breast Service (5/84 - 11/92); Chairman, Department of Breast Medical Oncology (11/92 - present), and Director, Breast Cancer Research Group. Currently he is Professor of Medicine, Chairman of the Department of Breast Medical Oncology and Nellie B. Connally Chair in Breast Cancer at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Hortobagyi has received numerous academic awards, including the Nylene Eckles Professorship of Breast Cancer Research at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; the Cino del Duca Award, Paris, France, 1995; the 1997 Sir Peter Freyer Medal and Memorial Lecture, in Galway, Ireland; the 1997 Brinker International Award of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation; the 1999 Vermeille Medal of the City of Paris, France; and in 2001, the rank of Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur (Paris, France). In 2000, he was selected as the Most Frequently Published Breast Cancer Investigator of the 20th Century. In 2003, he received the Horizon Scientific Achievement Award in Cancer Research, Glenn Robbins Award, Award of Excellence - 21st Annual Miami Breast Cancer Conference and the 2004 Jeffrey A. Gottlieb Memorial Award. He was elected corresponding Member of the National Academy of Medicine of Argentina, Mexico and Hungary; Honorary Member of the Clinical Oncology Societies of Argentina, Brazil, Hungary, Mexico, Peru, and Spain; and Honorary Member of the Senology Societies of Germany, Greece, Hungary, Mexico, and Peru. His professional society activities include membership in the American Society of Clinical Oncology, where he currently serves as member of the Board of Directors; American Association for Cancer Research; Fellow of the American College of Physicians; President of the International Society of Breast Diseases (Senology), 1996-1998; and Member of the Board of Governors of the International Association for Breast Cancer Research, 1993-1998.
