These included terrorism in Northern Ireland, Soviet human rights abuses, cocaine smuggling, torture in southern Africa, Balkan assassinations ad MI5 spying on domestic targets. Special Branch investigated him twice under the Official Secrets Act and also detained him under the Prevention of Terrorism Act - simply for doing his job. Scrapes like these, plus having operated in many bumpy places, give his novels real life authenticity beyond simple research. It was to be closer to their daughter and son that he and wife, Ann, moved from mid Wales to Chichester, West Sussex.
