Gimena Romero

Gimena Romero is an artist, author and writer based in Mexico City. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado, and a Master’s degree in Art Production and Research from UNAM, Mexico. She hs also pursued studies at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, France, in Symbology.

Since the beginning of her career, Gimena has adopted embroidery as her main artistic medium, specializing in Haute Couture at Lesage, Paris, France; goldwork embroidery as a confraternity member in Seville, Spain; and historical techniques such as blackwork and needle lace at the Royal School of Needlework, England, as well as research at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. She is the author of the first formal research on Mexican embroidery and a passionate admirer of her country.

She has received international recognition, and her pieces are part of private and state collections, including those of the Bank of Mexico and the Museum of Historical Memory of Sant Cugat, Spain. Her work has been exhibited in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, France, Portugal, Ukraine, Slovakia, Spain, and Switzerland.

Gimena is the author of fiction, poetry, and textile research published by Thule Ediciones, Fundación Armella Spitalier, and Editorial GG. She founded and directs the first specialization in Embroidery Applied to Art and Design (BAAD).

Her work interweaves memory, migration, territory, lineage, body and alchemy through techniques and materials that range from the ancestral to the contemporary.
