He served in the US Army for threeyears, earned a master's degree in education at the University of Minnesota, taught high school English, and irected plays. During the first fiveyears of his teaching career, he and his wife, Nancy, owned and farmed 160 acres in western Minnesota, where they raised cattle, hogs, and grain.
