He and his wife Debby spend half the year in Evanston, Illinois, and the rest in a log cabin on Lake Superio in Ontonagon County, Michigan, the prototype of Porcupine County. He is also author of three nonfiction books, What's That Pig Outdoors: A Memoir of Deafness; Zephyr: Tracking a Dream Across America, and Flight of the Gin Fizz: Midlife at 4,500 Feet.
