Henry Steele Commager

Henry Steele Commager (1902-1998) was an American historian and the author of forty books and seven hundred essays and reviews. He taught at Columbia University and Amherst College. A prolific liberal intellectual, he helped define modern lberalism in the United States. He also edited one of the most influential compilations of American historical documents, Documents of American History, and was coauthor of the widely used history text The Growth of the American Republic. He was awarded the 1972 Gold Medal for History from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
