Most of his work has taken place in the Southeastern U.S. He taught for many years at both Harvard University and the University of Alabama. He has been a researcher, teacher, curator, mueum director, anthropology department chair, and president of two national professional organizations. He is a lifetime member of the Association for Gravestone Studies and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
