Over the course of his career he spent a good deal of time gathering military intelligence in communist eastern Europe. This included tree years as a ground operations officer with the British Commander-in-Chief's Mission to the Soviet Forces in (East) Germany, and four years as a military attache at the British Embassy in Warsaw.
