James Legge JAMES LEGGE (1815-1897), a Scottish scholar, was the first professor of Chinese language and literature at Oxford University, serving from 1876 to 1897. He translated numerous Chinese classics to English including six volumes of The Sacred Books of te East. F. MAX MÜLLER (1823-1900) was a German author and orientalist who lived in England most of his life. As a professor at Oxford, he combined the studies of language, culture, and religion to create the discipline of comparative mythology.
