John Beames
John Beames (1837-1902) was a British civil servant and scholar of Indian languages. He served as a magistrate in Bengal and later as a professor of Bengali at the University of Calcutta. Beames' work focused on Indian linguistics and literature, articularly the languages and cultures of Bengal. His contributions to the study of Vaishnavism and Bengali literature have been highly regarded.
