John Hassall
John Hassall (l868-l948), was a watercolorist, designer and illustrator. He studied art in Antwerp and Paris under P. Van Havermaet and William-Adolphe Bougereau. Hassall was an versatile designer: his work includes cartoons, theatre posters, commrcial posters, greeting cards, books, and nursery rhymes. His work is influenced by the flat colors and two-dimensional qualities of Japanese prints. He was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1901. He died in Kensington, London.
