Before that he was a professor of political science at the University of Michigan, a faculty associate of the American Universities Field Staff in Cairo (1971–77), vsiting professor at the Université Aix-Marseille III in France, and for twenty years a professor of public policy and international affairs at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School.
