His degrees in sociology from the University of California-Berkeley and Sa Jose State Univeristy coupled with a library science degree from the Univerity of Oregon provided the foundation for the study of human interaction using advanced professional research methods. International work at the International Labour Organisation in Geneva, Switzerland and the Monterey Institute of International Studies (now the Middlebury Institute of International Studies) graduate school consolidated his love for how places, eras and culture shape who we are in terms of family history.
