Larry L CoxLarry L. Cox grew up in a western suburb of Chicago, but he started his love affair with loons in northern Wisconsin at age thirteen while on a fishing trip. As he began to frequent the lakes of the upper midwest and Canada--vacationing, canoeing andfishing--his firm association of loons with the wilderness was indelibly imprinted. Cox graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in English. As a profession, he writes for life insurance companies. As an author, he has published numerous trade press and feature articles on insurance, financial planning, fishing, outdoor life and birding, principally on loons. In addition to this book, he has self-published a book entitled On the Waters: Fishing for Life's Simple Pleasures, a collection of humorous and dramatic stories gleaned from over fifty years of his fishing adventures and misadventures. Over the years, his passion for loons has evolved. It has accelerated ever since Cox experienced an amateur birder's ultimate thrill: capturing, holding and rescuing an injured loon from certain death. Until recently he lived on a chain of lakes in northwestern Minnesota that held many active breeding loon pairs. After moving to the lakes region of central New Hampshire, he observed the area's loons whenever he could from April to November. In August of 2008, Cox passed away suddenly at the age of sixty-six, after finishing the manuscript of this book. Through the efforts of his wife, Charlotte, who edited it, his daughter, Allison, who proofed it, and his son-in-law, Scott, who designed the page layout, the manuscript was brought to publication readiness.
