Leonard Peltier is of Lakota, Dakota, and Anishinaabe descent, raised among the Turtle Mountain Chippewa and Fort Totten Sioux Nations of North Dakota. He emerged as an activist for Native American civil rights in the 1960s. He wa confined at Leavenworth Prison for .
