He was born on February 25, 1842, to Richard Wingfield, 6th Viscount Powerscourt, and Lad Elizabeth Jocelyn. Coming from an aristocratic background, he pursued unconventional paths for someone of his standing, developing a reputation for his theatrical roles and vivid travel accounts. His interest in performance extended into his writing, which often combined dramatic flair with historical insight. Wingfield painted and exhibited his work while also contributing as a correspondent and observer in places experiencing social and political change. His passion for travel led him to diverse locations, and these experiences frequently shaped the settings and atmosphere of his novels. He was known for exploring complex emotional and philosophical ideas through characters set against the backdrop of historical turbulence. Wingfield shared his life with Cecilia FitzPatrick from 1868 onward.
